Recycle Paper to Save Money
and Your World

Why recycle paper? First, let’s look at some of the common reasons folks don’t.

It’s pretty cheap and there seems to be lots of it to spare. Maybe you’ve heard that recycling uses more energy than it takes to manufacture new paper. And it certainly does require extra effort and often a monthly charge from your trash hauler to recycle. So why bother?

Why You Should Do It

Consider these facts:

  • The U.S. alone produces and uses 1/3 of the world’s paper supply (but not for long…see below)

  • Each day, U.S. businesses use enough paper to circle the Earth four times

  • Paper waste accounts for over 40% of U.S. landfill space, requiring new landfills to be built

  • It takes 2-3 tons of trees to produce 1 ton of paper

  • Making paper from recycled content uses 30-55% less energy and creates 74% less air pollution and 35% less water pollution
  • Now think ahead 10 years when China, with a population four times that of the U.S. (1.3 billion people vs. 300 million people) has the same paper consumption as the U.S., according to China’s National Household Paper Industry Association.

India, with a population of 1.2 billion people is not far behind China. And consider the United Nations’ prediction that by 2050 the Earth’s population will grow by 37%, an extra 2.5 billion people.

Will the Earth have more or less forests by then? In the Amazon alone, one acre of rain forest disappears each second. If we increase our consumption of tree-based products at this rate, we cannot replace this slow-growing resource fast enough.

Along with better forest management practices, we need to recycle paper.

    How to Do It Easily

    1. Set up kitchen recycle bins
    2. Call your trash hauler/recycler to start service
    3. Both flat cardboard (tissue, cereal boxes, etc.) and corrugated cardboard (brown shipping cartons, etc.) are recyclable
    4. Before you recycle office paper, use it again as scrap paper for lists, messages, etc.
    5. Convert to paperless statements for all your home and business bills
    6. Encourage less waste by not buying products that are over packaged
