The Hippies: Around a Long Time and Here to Stay
In recent history hippies have been associated with the peace dove, peace signs such as the one shown here
advocating nuclear disarmament, and a culture announcing independence from conformity, championing individual rights and as embracing peace, love and community. According to sources listed in Wikipedia, the foundation of the 60’s movement can be found in an ancient Greek counterculture espoused by philosophers such as Diogenes and the Cynics. Their philosophy can be found also in the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, Buddha, St. Francis of Assisi, Henry David Thoreau and Gandhi. The German Der Wandervogel (migratory bird) movement emigrated to the United States in the early 1900’s bringing with it a preference for a natural lifestyle and community. By the mid 1960’s, the popular U.S. hippie movement had spread to the U.K., Europe, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, Mexico and Brazil. It is now recognized all over the world.

In that way, you will surely share something with them and other innovators: a determination to be who you want to be.
