Is an Anti-Aging Supplement
Right for You?

An anti-aging supplement may be a vitamin, mineral or an essential hormone of which we produce less as we age. Or, like vitamin D, one that we get too little of when not exposed to the Sun. Most vitamins and minerals we can obtain through a healthy balanced diet. Some we cannot.

Before you choose a supplement, balance its claimed benefits against what scientific studies have found, and consider its potential risks or cross-reactivity with prescriptions you may already be taking.

While you're at it, check this list of commonly prescribed medications that suppress the essential brain transmitter acetylcholine, possibly leading to learning and memory problems.

Look very critically at any supplement that claims to "reverse aging." For example, glucosamine sulfate has been shown in some scientific studies to help in the rebuilding of cartilage tissue.

While of course it is good to have the proper amount of healthy cartilage appropriate to your age, this does not mean that glucosamine will return your cartilage to its volume or condition at age twenty.

Another excellent example is hormones such as DHEA and HGH, both widely sold as supplements with claimed rejuvenation benefits. DHEA was banned in the U.S. in 1985 but brought back when supplements were deregulated in 1994. While it is effective in treating adrenal deficiencies, there is no scientific evidence that it slows the effects of aging.

Human Growth Hormone (HGH) "releasers" are commonly sold, but also lack any solid scientific support as an anti aging supplement. The research here suggests that a proper diet and exercise program is much more beneficial to slowing signs of aging than HGH.
